Langone Brothers
Tuesday October 30, 2001

At first glance, brothers Pete and Tommy Langone couldn't seem more different. Pete, the hulking firefighter with Brooklyn’s engine 252, and Tommy - nicknamed Captain Adrenaline - the lanky silver haired emergency services cop.

Tommy wasn't as big and maybe not as loud as Pete, but they both spoke the same way from the heart.

It was with broken hearts that thousands of mourners came to salute these brothers who looked so different - but on September 11th - met with the same tragic fate. It was a double funeral mass in Williston Park, Long Island for brothers who lived and died serving their city. Officer Randy Miller was Tommy’s partner. He says, “They were 100% active all the time and when work was to be done, they were the first guys stepping up to the plate to do it.”

For Pete, that could mean anything from running into a burning building to molding the next generation of heroes. Captain Ed Metcalf remembers, “It's all passed on, it's all tradition, it's all you learn from senior men, and Pete was one of those senior guys who passed on his knowledge and his expertise.”

Tommy's expertise was saving lives. Back in 1993 he risked his own to save a man from a suicidal plunge. On that tragic day in lower Manhattan, he was saving lives when he lost his own.

If there's any consultation to the wives, children, and friends these brave men leave behind, it's knowing they died doing what they loved.

New York’s bravest call each other brother, and on this day, the bravest and the finest were all brothers of the Langone boys.
