GLAMOUR MAGAZINE NAMES 2001 “WOMEN OF THE YEAR”
WHAT: GLAMOUR magazine is hosting its 12th annual women of the year awards, sponsored by Revlon, honoring extraordinary and inspirational women from the worlds of entertainment, business, sports, journalism and politics. The ceremony will feature a musical performance by Denyce Graves, who will be introduced by The Drew Carey Show’s Christa Miller.
WHO: 2001 GLAMOUR WOMEN OF THE YEAR:
- YAMEL MERINO and MORIA SMITH: Representatives of all September 11th heroes, EMT Marino and NY Police Officer Smith were the only two female rescue workers who died alongside the people they were trying to save. Award presented by Commissioner Bernard Kerik, who will be introduced by Revlon spokesperson Karen Duffy.
- SALMA HAYEK: Inspirational leading actress who has paved the way for the success of all Latina actresses in the future. Award presented by Julie Taymor.
- DEBRA MESSING: Applauded for entertaining millions of Americans each week on NBC’s Will & Grace with her shining talent, intellect, comedic genius and grace. Award presented by Molly Shannon.
- DIANE SAWYER: Co-anchor of Good Morning American and ABC Primetime Live whose passion for hard-hitting stories has earned her 11 Emmy Awards. Award presented by George Stephanopoulos.
- EVE ENSLER: Playwright and activist who turned her play The Vagina Monologues into a vehicle that has raised $5 million to combat violence against women worldwide. Award presented by Rosie Perez.
- JENNIFER ESTESS: Honored for launching project ALS, which has raised $10 million to date for continued research and testing, while bravely battling the incurable disease. Award presented by Katie Couric
- SUSAN STROMAN: Recognized for her extraordinary accomplishments as the first director-choreographer to have four hit musicals running on Broadway at the same time. Award presented by Harry Conick, Jr.
- LIVE ARNESEN and ANN BANCROFT: Explorers who became the first women ever to cross Antarctica on foot. Award presented by Connie Nielsen.
- PAMELA THOMAS GRAHAM: CEO of CNBC and the most powerful African American in the cable news industry. Award presented by Maria Bartiromo.
GLAMOUR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD PRESENTED TO:
- GERALDINE FERRARO: Honored for fighting the odds all
her life and being an inspiration to women as the first
female vice presidential candidate. Currently battling
bone cancer, she is lobbying Congress for more funding
for cancer research. Award presented by The Honorable
Patricia Schroeder.
WOW WOMAN AWARD PRESENTED TO:
- DR. BERNADINE HEALY: CEO and president of the American Red Cross who ahs helped to heal our nation by spearheading the most extensive disaster relief response in the history of the American Red Cross. Award presented by Glamour editor in chief Cindi Leive.
- The WOW Women is a previous winner whose recent accomplishments warrant recognition.
This year GLAMOUR will make a special donation to the American Red Cross and encourage guests of the awards t do the same. Following the ceremony, Revlon will host an online celebrity auction win which WOTY winners and presenters will each donate items to be auctioned on eBay in November. All Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross.
