Glamour Women of the
Year Awards

ABC's Diane Sawyer had words of wisdom for Americans terrified by the Trade Center attacks and anthrax scares. She said, “Courage is fear that said its prayers … It's not that we're not afraid, it's that we know what we have to do.”

Glamour Magazine knew the tough job it had to do this year, picking Sawyer and others for its 2001 Women of the Year Awards. The event, held in New York on Monday, drew the likes of Debra Messing, Salma Hayak, Katie Couric, Karen Duffy, and Geraldine Ferraro who were among the women honored in every field from business to politics to entertainment.
Debra Messing of “Will and Grace” won kudos for making us laugh and Salma Hayek for inspiring Latina actresses. Accepting her award, Salma said, “I'm grateful to Glamour for thinking of me.”
Former vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, who's now battling bone cancer, won a lifetime achievement award. Some big name presenters included CNBC's Maria Bartiromo and Katie Couric. Jenifer Estess was honored for raising awareness about the incurable disease ALS.
Actress Rosie Perez praised New Yorkers by saying, “New York has stood up and held its head up high. We took it on the chin. They hit us hard and we got right back up.
