Terrorism Defense Classes
Wednesday
October 24, 2001
A woman suddenly has a terrorist's knife at her throat. Then there's gunfire and the masked villain is dead. Or at least he would be, if he weren’t really the great Walter Philbrick, a teacher who is giving his pupils a lesson in counter terrorism, 21st century style.

Philbrick tells “Extra,” “I'm not a very good victim. I'm the first guy to stand up and say, ‘OK men, take these guys down.’"
Philbrick's students at a Florida survival school are learning from one of the finest. Philbrick, a a retired cop and SWAT team leader, believes in fighting back against terrorists and says, “They say in SWAT, ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."
Philbrick is drilling people of all ages from all walks of life, including a pupil who is a dentist who says, “I've learned how to defend myself against a knife attack and a gun attack.”
Philbrick not only teaches his class how to arm themselves, but also how to disarm others. In the event of a plane hijacking, Philbrick advocates what he calls environmental weapons. He says, “Hit the guy with luggage, throw it at him."
Another tactic Philbrick recommends is to ask the flight attendant for a can of soda and, “throw it as hard as you can at someone, knock them unconscious, put their eye out, hit them in the groin."
Philbrick's even taught top private security directors like Anthony Luizzi a thing or two about fighting dirty who says, “the only way to fight terrorism is to think like a terrorist … You've got to be ready to give up your life to save it."
