The Most Expensive Homes In America
Wednesday October 24, 2001

What is it like to spend 50 million bucks on an equestrian center near Hollywood, a hefty 54 million dollars for a farm in Nantucket, or a mere 45 million for an exclusive estate in beautiful Bel Air, California? Felicia Paik from Forbes.com says, “Not everybody has that kind of money."

If you like to dream, Paik says you may be interested in one of the homes on the Forbes.com list of the 10 most-pricey places on the planet. She says, “A lot of the homes are in private locations. They are in places where people want to live where it's close to the action."

The newest on the list is a 92-acre ranch in Hidden Valley. It may look like ranch living at it's finest, but it's actually less than an hour outside of Los Angeles."

The sprawling estate is a horse lovers dream with four ranch houses and three separate guest quarters. Philip Spalding of Sotheby's says the property is one of a kind and worth it's hefty price tag. He says, “It's a world class equestrian facility at all levels from breeding all the way to showing."

Another high-end compound is a secluded 24-acre farm in Nantucket which features 12 guest cottages, two owner's residences, barns for entertaining, plus an exclusive 14-room "Westmoor Inn" that originally belonged to the Vanderbilt family. Unbelievably, this farm also has a baseball field and a petting zoo.

In New York, 66 million dollars can get you the entire 49th, 50th, and 51st floors at the Trump International Hotel and Tower.

In the exclusive enclave of Bel Air, California, "La Belle Vie" is on the block for 45 million dollars. Coldwell Banker agent, Ron de Salvo, says this 35,000 square foot palatial home has 22 karat gold encrusted marble floors, and an incredible winding staircase leading to the estate's nine bedrooms and 22 bathrooms. The beautiful balconies overlook the gardens, swimmers pool, and fountains.

For America’s rich and famous, any of these homes would be the purchase of a lifetime, but for most of us, the down payment alone is more than we'll make in a lifetime.
