Celebrities Increase Security
Tuesday October 23, 2001

With all the security of gated mansions and stretch limos, many stars in Hollywood are still feeling insecure these days along with the rest of America. Actor James Woods tells “Extra,” “I think we are in extraordinary danger right now."

Scott Wolf declares, “I think it would be unfair to tell people not to be afraid, it's a scary thing right now."

“West Wing’s” John Spencer advises, “I think we all have to be vigilant, but I think that's a kind of good way to live anyway in the modern world."

With the anthrax scare, fears of more bio-terrorism, and actual threats of physical terrorism against the studios, the “modern world” in Hollywood now includes heavy security. That includes barriers and metal detectors at the gates, not to mention empty mailbags, since many studios admit: fan mail will never get to your favorite stars.

Even shooting out of the studio, gives actors cause for concern for their personal safety. The location for a new film "Kiss the Bride" starring Alyssa Milano, Johnathon Schaech, Talia Shire and Burt Young is being shot in a private home in Santa Monica, California. The film's director and writer Vanessa Parise voices the fears so many feel today.

Parise says, “Is there going to be biological warfare? How is the water? Should we get gas masks? People certainly have been buying gas masks and even people's managers have been bringing them to set."

Count Alyssa Milano of “Charmed” among them. She's not only storing water pills to stay hydrated should the water supply be tainted, you wouldn't believe what she's carrying in her car. She says, “I have purchased gas masks."

Actress Shannon Elizabeth is prepared too. She's admitted to owning not just gas masks for herself and her fiancé and her dogs, but chemical suits as well. Plus she's keeping Cipro in her purse. She says, “Everyone's doing what they can to make sure they're protected and safe and happy."

Celebs with big bucks might want to talk to Texas man George Hamilton who is adapting a high-tech, bulletproof material used in fighter planes to make bombproof shelters. Hamilton admits one A-list celebrity and a big Hollywood director have already inquired about them to the tune of a $100,000 a piece and says, “If you're/ a multi-millionaire, it's a relative cost."

In light of life post-September 11th, celebrities, like all Americans, are taking precautions. Comedian and actor Cheech Marin says, “I caution my children to be careful. I’m careful with the mail I open, where I go. We're at war."

Hollywood is on alert. x
