Katie Couric's Sister Dies
Thursday October 18, 2001

Matt Lauer broke the news at the top of the “Today” show. Katie Couric's sister, Emily, a Virginia state senator, lost her valiant battle against pancreatic cancer today.

Diagnosed with the disease in July of 2000, Emily dropped out of the race for lieutenant governor to focus on her health. One of her proudest accomplishments as a lawmaker was making Virginia the first state to require insurance companies to pay for colon cancer screening. You may recall Katie’s husband died of colon cancer.

Emily showed great ambition at an early age, running for president of her elementary school. Before politics, Emily was a journalist, a teacher, and more importantly, the wife of Dr. George Beller and the mother of two sons Ray and Jeff.

Emily Couric, a caring optimist to the end, was only 54.
