Wednesday October 17, 2001

Laura San Giacomo, Jane Kaczmarek, and Annabella Sciorra lead an all-star cast in the made-for-TV movie "Jenifer." It's the heartbreaking and inspirational true story of Jenifer Estess, a vivacious young New Yorker who was diagnosed with the fatal neuromuscular disease ALS (or Lou Gehrig's Disease) four years ago and continues her courageous battle against ALS to this day.

Actress Laura San Giacomo says, “I felt that these women were so extraordinary and that their story was really important to tell.”

San Giacomo plays Jenifer, while Kaczmarek and Sciorra portray her sisters. The movie shows how Jenifer and her sisters took a stand against the disease by creating Project ALS, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and money for ALS research. It is a story that has touched the hearts of so many people who know Jenifer, including Katie Couric and Donna Hanover, who plays herself in the movie. Hanover says, “She's become a very dear friend of mine. She's gutsy, she's charming, and she’s funny. She really is an amazing woman.”

In addition to providing an honest portrayal of the brave people fighting ALS, the movie features notable performances by Marisa Tomei, Rob Morrow, Scott Wolf, Juliana Marguiles, and so many others who have been inspired by Jenifer Estess and her sisters.

San Giacomo says, “These women are an example to all of us motivated by love that you can change the world.”
