'Survivor' Returns
Friday
October 12, 2001
One month after the terror attacks against America, “Survivor” returned to the airwaves Thursday introducing 16 new contestants struggling for survival and a shot of one million dollars. This time it takes place in the heart of Africa.

First to get the boot from the bush was Diane Ogden, the 42-year old mail carrier from Lincoln, Nebraska. Diane almost lost consciousness after an extremely difficult race for tribal immunity. She talked to "Extra" this morning about the dubious distinction.
She says, “I actually don't feel too bad about it. It was really tough out there. More than I expected it to be.”
For fans of “Survivor,” the season premiere provided a great escape from the harsh realities dominating the news. The African backdrop provided spectacular wildlife shots and the game itself providing the voyeuristic drama millions love to expect from “Survivor.”
“Extra” was in Kenya during the taping of “Survivor 3” and the survivors definitely have their work cut out for them in this harsh environment. That should make the game even more compelling than its first two runs.
But the word "survivor" has taken on new meaning since the attacks of September 11th, and the TV landscape has changed.
