Anthrax Found in NY
Friday October 12, 2001

The anthrax scare has moved to New York City. A woman who works on the “NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw” has tested positive for anthrax. Now, all NBC employees will be tested, parts of the network headquarters have been shut down, and New Yorkers are understandably concerned.

New York mayor Rudy Giuliani says the FBI is investigating a suspicious letter sent to NBC two and a half weeks ago. “Extra” has also learned an envelope with a powdery substance was opened by a Fox News employee. She has tested negative for anthrax. Mayor Giuliani says, “If you get a suspicious letter in the mail, do not open it. Leave the room and immediately call the FBI."

ABC, CBS, and CNN took no chances shutting down their mailrooms today. The New York Times building was quarantined after it received threats. All this comes after three tabloid employees were exposed to anthrax in Florida, and one of them died. So is the media a target of the terrorists?

Terrorism expert Jeffrey Simon does not believe the anthrax outbreaks are in any way related to the World Trade Center attacks. He says, “It's just not their MO. They like to act, as we've seen, on a big grand scale. It's just not their style to take out one or two people at a time."

One piece of good news is the NBC employee was only exposed to a less harmful strain of skin anthrax and she's doing fine. But the scare is still a setback for a city and a nation trying to feel secure once again.
