At last night's Gotham Independent Film Awards, Robert De Niro used his moment in the spotlight - accepting a lifetime achievement award - to thank the emergency workers who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11th.

When accepting his award De Niro said, “I accept this award for all those courageous heroes and thank each and every one of them for what they have done for this city and this country.”
De Niro spoke for all the stars in attendance including Glenn Close, Marcia Gay Harden, and Uma Thurman. Uma tells “Extra” she has left her home only briefly since the attacks and felt it was important to come out last night. She said, “It's a big deal for people to be out and try to return to life as we all go about redefining what we're doing.”
“Sopranos’” star Edie Falco has been one of the many New York celebrities paying visits to City firehouses and police precincts. She said, “I'm almost embarrassed that that means anything to anyone. But at the same time, the people that we have been visiting have told us that it makes a difference.”
Meantime, Falco will be among the many stars paying tribute to the music and the message of John Lennon tonight at Radio City Music Hall. Lennon's son, Sean, is just one of the artists who will perform his father's songs in a live telecast on TNT benefiting the city's relief organizations and other charities. Sean says, “It's really appropriate now to remember my father's message of peace and I think it's a really appropriate time for this show to happen.”
Lennon says his father would be proud that his songs have renewed meaning and relevance during this time of crisis.
