Training Day
Monday October 1, 2001

He's always been one of the good guys: a soldier, a lawyer, and a football coach. Denzel Washington has done it all, except go bad. Until now.

Denzel says, “He's not a bad guy. He's confused. He's a good cop. No, he's out of his mind is what he is (laughing).”

In "Training Day," Denzel plays a larger than life narcotics officer who rules the mean streets of L.A. with a style all his own. He takes new recruit Ethan Hawke under his wing for 24 hours of training. Ethan says, “I think being in a movie with him makes you look good.”

But Denzel's bad boy turn might not only surprise his fans. Even Denzel's wife Pauletta was shocked to see his tough guy interior come to life. Denzel says, “My wife didn’t like it. She didn’t like it at all (laughing) … I know my kids won't see it.”

The rough movie was shot on some of L.A.’s toughest streets, but Ethan says he didn't worry about the dangers, thanks to Denzel. He says, “He always brings a lot of good will with him. I always felt pretty comfortable.”

The Oscar winning Washington is already generating buzz for his powerful performance, but the star says, don't give him points for playing a bad guy. He says, “It's acting. It was a different role, a good role. I had a great time making it."
