The Next 'Friends?'
It
is like a cross between "Friends" and "Sex
and the City." "Coupling" has taken jolly old
England by storm. The show has a familiar plot line: six friends,
three men and three women, who like to hang out together.
But in this show, there is a whole lot of loving going on.
NBC has bought the rights to the edgy BBC series,
reportedly hoping it could eventually replace "Friends"
in the "must see TV" lineup. Annabel Vered of TV Guide
says NBC will replace the British cast with an American one.
But instead of going with star power, the network will look
for fresh faces. She says, "It worked for ‘Friends’ nine
years ago. The network hopes it will work for couplings in 2003."
But "Coupling" is not the only candidate to replace
"Friends." Also generating buzz is the new show "Good
Morning Miami" from the creators of "Will & Grace,"
and "Hidden Hills," a wild look at suburban life.
Last month, we asked NBC entertainment president Jeff Zucker
about replacing "Friends." He was confident that a
new mega-hit will emerge. He said, "When it was time for
‘Cosby’ to go, something came right behind it. I have great
confidence we'll be able to do that in the future when it's
necessary." |
