Paula Poundstone
It's been a long road to recovery for Paula Poundstone. Her arrest and legal battle played out in front of millions. Paula Poundstone is taking her tragic past to the stage now and surprisingly turning it into big time laughs.
"Extra" caught up with Paula on tour
in Florida, where we talked about being sober and her return
to comedy. She says, "Sometimes when I can't think of cat
jokes, I throw things in about rehab … People are really nice,
they say a lot of encouraging things."
Back in 2001, Paula was cleared of child sex abuse, but she plead no contest to felony child endangerment for driving intoxicated with children in her car. She says, "There was some misinformation layered at me, charges that were dropped and there were charges that were real and mistakes and crimes that I did commit."
Paula has regained custody of her adopted children. She says, "So long as my kids are with me and I can do my silly little job, I am happy as a clam."
Paula even keeps her cell phone on during a performance, just in case the kids call. She says, "If she calls me on stage, I take the call. I'm sure that sounds so rude as a performer."
Paula has a soft spot for other celebrities, like Martha Stewart. She says, "Having had this experience, it was a sharp reminder that a person is innocent until proven guilty and everyone else can just back off and wait."
Headlines and tough times behind her, Paula's comedy is once again taking center stage.
