Rob Lowe Leaving 'West Wing'

There is a major shakeup on the way for the Bartlett administration. In a surprise move, Rob Lowe, who plays deputy communications director Sam Seaborn, announced he will leave "The West Wing" next year.

In a statement released today, Lowe thanked Warner Brothers for treating him well, but said he felt his character's time was up. He said, "As much as it hurts to admit it, it has been increasingly clear for quite a while that there was no longer a place for Sam Seaborn on ‘The West Wing.’"

"Extra" caught up with Lowe two weeks ago on the set of his new movie "The Christmas Shoes." Even then, he expressed concern about his "West Wing" character. He said, "It's been four years and I don't have much of a life. I don't have a love interest."

This morning, "Extra" spoke with NBC entertainment president Jeff Zucker. He says they haven't decided how Lowe's character will be written off the show. But he offered a small ray of hope to fans of America’s number one primetime show. Despite reports that "Friends" is about to enter its last season, Zucker told us it's premature to write off the show. Zucker says, "Right now, we're just concentrating on this year. Beyond that there's been no discussion, no talks, and there can't be really, until we get further into the season."

And even if the "Friends" do call it quits, insiders say don't be surprised to see at least one of the gang back with a spin off.
