Firefighter Calendar
For years, it's been a New York City tradition: the New York City Firefighter's calendar. Twelve months of New York's bravest and buffest. Men like 34-year-old firefighter Tommy Caruso. He says, "A lot of guys in the firehouse they bust my chops and call me pretty boy and hunk."
But this year there was no calendar to welcome in the new year. For many, seeing images of the still standing Twin Towers and their fallen brothers was too much to bear.
Men like Rob Cortiz who was photographed riding the Wall Street bull, the always-smiling Tom Foley, and then there was Angel Juarve. Angel was known as the handsome firefighter who won $250,000 on Fox's "Murder in Small Town X." Angel's brother Charles is a New York City police officer. He says, "I want them to remember him like that happy, always happy."
And the mothers of these fallen heroes are making certain their
sons will always be remembered smiling. The firefighters calendar
will now be released after all. Tom, Rob, and Angel will all
be featured, each with a special written tribute from their
mothers.
Photographer Alan Batt says this time a few things will be different. The original cover photo showing firefighter Danny Kean and the Twin Towers was re-shot. The new cover features Danny and a gleaming Empire State Building.
It’s a 12-month tribute honoring the heroes we have lost and the heroes who will make certain their legacies live on.
