The Private Side of Being Tom
An extremely candid Tom Cruise discusses his life long before becoming one of the biggest stars on the planet Sunday in an E! Entertainment special. Cruise rolls out classic home videos, and fans can get a glimpse of him growing up and developing a rock-solid relationship with his mom and his three sisters.
It wasn't always easy for Hollywood's golden boy. "You know I remember one Christmas when we had no money and it was actually the most memorable Christmas of my childhood," Cruise told E! "We all worked, and my sisters worked as soon as they could get a job, and my mother was working. My sisters would trade off cooking. We all had jobs and contributed."
But through the tough times, it was obvious at a young age that Cruise was not camera shy. And yes, his home movies show early signs of a future action star in the making.
Tom also reflects on his high-profile relationships in the interview. Following the break-up of his 10-year marriage to Nicole Kidman and his more-recent split with Penélope Cruz, Tom shares how vital romance remains to his happiness.
"It's not something where I am not a human being unless I have, you know… Because I have a full life, and I'm really happy with that," Cruise reveals. "I like being in a relationship, I have to admit. I just like those moments. And I've enjoyed the relations I've had. I like that thing of… taking care of a woman."
Cruise, a father of two, also reveals in the interview his added motivation to be the kind of dad his son and daughter can count on, due to promises and let downs he experienced with his own father.
"What am I going to do, how am I going to be as a man, as a father, someone they can trust, someone they can know," he says. "Because I so wanted them to know I'm there for you."
