Stars Storm Democratic Convention

Boston hasn't seen this many stars in one place since "Cheers," as Hollywood's hottest stars make the scene with the biggest names in news at the Democratic National Convention.

At Sunday's intense Red Sox-Yankees, game, Katie Couric and Ben Affleck played a little hardball as he taught her how to swing (a bat), before John Kerry threw out the first pitch.

And the star partying continued from Fenway Park to the Avalon Hotel, right across the street, at the Democratic Gain and Rock the Vote party, where Hillary Clinton joined Jerry Springer, Howard Dean, Danny Glover and Natalie Portman, who gave us her take on the man of the moment: "It's like -- heartthrob Kerry."

Yes, John Kerry certainly has a lot of famous fans. "I know most people laugh off celebs," Natalie told us. "If I can get someone to pay attention or read more on Kerry I hope that can make some sort of difference."

"Joan of Arcadia's" Amber Tamblyn is also committed to Kerry, but laughed off any intimation that she's received a sign from god about the election.

Meanwhile, with politicians and stars staying at exclusive hotels like the "Nine Zero," there are a lot of security concerns. Katie Couric said she's, "become fairly fatalistic about it. It's something in the back of my mind."

She revealed she found out the hard way how tight security in Boston is this week, telling us "They wouldn't let my hairdresser bring her hairspray in here, so I think they're obviously going to great lengths to make sure this place remains safe."

But when we caught up with CBS evening news anchor Dan Rather -- a veteran of many conventions at the convention center, he told us he feels perfectly safe. "It is a tempting target, but Boston is extremely well-organized," he insisted, before being interrupted by a loud hammering sound, prompting him to laugh, "As you can hear they're still organizing -- this man hammering in the background."

The convention kicks off tonight, and a lot of Hollywood stars -- along with the rest of the country -- will be watching as the politicians take center stage.

For more details, catch "Extra's" Monday edition -- and stay tuned all week for much more of how Hollywood gets political, along with exclusive political party coverage from our all-star pundits, Chris Matthews, Al Franken and Fred Willard.
