Fight Fire With Firefighters
"Extra" answered the call to the premiere for the new FX series "Rescue Me," where we caught up with Denis Leary, who calls it, "Probably the funniest, most dramatic, and I think, sexiest show on TV right now."
And Denis is certainly on the firing line, as a star, Executive Producer, Writer, and co-creator of one the show, which premieres Wednesday night. The gruff, but lovable, comedian -- and friend to firefighters everywhere -- plays a divorcing fireman and father of three who survived 9/11 but remains haunted by the ghost of a close relative who was not as lucky.
In real life, Denis lost a firefighting cousin in a blaze in his hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts. "Nine-Eleven provides kind of a launching pad for where these guys are," Denis told us. "But it's the fire department: every day there's something exciting, something strange, funny, or heavy that happens."
And Denis revealed that a scene from the first episode, in which a naked and crazed fire victim attacks him, is based on a real life incident.
Hailed as brutally funny, poignant, and truthful, the show has already received four-star reviews in the New York newspapers, and Denis couldn't be happier. "The reviews are coming in and I think they agree with us that the show is really funny, a lot of great action, and very sexy!"
Meanwhile, Leary continues to be a hero to firefighters. Yesterday, through his fund that has raised almost $5 million in the last four years, Leary donated a $565,000 mobile command center to the New York fire department.
