ESPYs Honor Fallen Hero
Tom Cruise took the stage at the ESPY Awards in Hollywood Wednesday night, where he paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Pat Tillman. The NFL star, who turned down a $3.6 million contract to serve our country at war, was killed in the line of duty.
The star-studded crowd inside the Kodak Theatre honored Tillman, who received last year's Arthur Ashe Courage Award. And outside the event, a VIP red carpet of stars, from Sharon Stone to Samuel L. Jackson, celebrated their sports heroes.
"I get to present Best Male Athlete, which I think is the nicest category," Stone admitted. "So I'm pretty excited."
"These guys know how to do it," Jackson insisted. "I like the show because these are guys we want to be. We want to be them. We think we're as good as them. We go, 'I could have made that shot.'"
Sexy tennis ace Serena Williams strutted her signature, savvy style at the event, telling us, "This is an original Aneres design. I designed it, it's my company, Aneres, which is my name spelled backward."
Meanwhile, Cruise partied backstage with the evening's host Jamie Foxx, Williams and Bernie Mac. And Denzel Washington was on hand to present this year's courage award.
As for the ESPY Awards host, Foxx managed to serve up a story about his racy onstage romp with tennis ace Serena Williams. And after Foxx asked her to slap his butt, he told us, "It's amazing. But I looked at it as business, and I'm serious about my business."
You can catch the ESPY Awards Sunday night.
