Miss Universe 2002

The beauty buzz at this year's Miss Universe pageant is being sidelined by political controversy.

Miss USA may be all smiles, this year she'll be taking a patriotic pose wearing the uniform of New York's bravest. But Miss Lebanon made her political statement by bowing out instead of standing on stage next to Miss Israel.

Miss Trinidad and Tobago, a Muslim, is being criticized by the Islamic world for taking part in the skimpy bathing-suit competition. Pageant host Daisy Fuentes says, "There is such ugliness and such turmoil that I think it’s lovely to lighten up for one night and showcase the beauty in a lot of these countries."

Bringing these beauties together from across the globe is proving to be a security challenge. Both Miss Egypt and Israel have received threats. "Extra" went behind the scenes at the battle of the sashes and found out that despite the politics everyone is ready for the big show.

Alongside Fuentes, NFL great Phil Simms will also host the show. But looking good and feeling your best isn't easy. Take a tip from the experts. Miss USA says, "Drink lots of water. That's all you need."

Miss Germany adds, "One of my beauty secrets is to get sleep."

"Survivor Africa" winner Ethan Zahn is one of the judges. He says, "I have to admit, I’m excited for the swimwear part of the event this evening."

It's going to be a tough call Ethan because all these beauties have universal appeal.
