Fran Drescher
She has an unforgettable accent and a contagious laugh that launched a thousand sitcom jokes. For six years, Fran Drescher starred as “The Nanny.” But as “The Nanny” went off the air and lived happily ever after, Fran began a very difficult period of her life.
Her 21-year marriage was ending, but she didn't know what was making her so sick, and neither did the doctors. They recommended everything from diet to drinks. She says, “So there I am, eating too much roughage, getting sloshed before bed, all in an attempt to cure myself.”
Finally, two years and eight doctors later, Fran was diagnosed with uterine cancer.
She candidly writes about her battle to beat the disease in her new book, "Cancer, Schmancer." Fran says, “Celebrities get the worst health care because most people don't want to tell you there's something wrong.”
Now Fran is teaching others to take charge of their health care. She says, “I want everybody to open a mouth and become more of an equal with their doctor.”
Last year, Fran was honored by Gilda's Club, the support center named for comedienne and ovarian cancer victim, Gilda Radner. As for Fran, she finds comfort in making us laugh, even when it's through her own tears.
