Johnny Carson
He was conspicuous by his absence. The legendary Johnny Carson was nowhere to be found among a star-studded parade of fellow NBC luminaries past and present at the network's 75th anniversary celebrations.
Esquire magazine editor-in-chief David
Granger says, “He's obsessive about staying out of the spotlight."
So obsessive about it, apparently, that Mr. “Tonight Show” ran away to sea. As recent pictures reveal, Johnny was reportedly getting ready to set sail for Mexico in his luxury yacht just days before the NBC bash. Granger says, “I think he's always been an intensely private person."
Esquire published a rare interview with Johnny in the
current issue and Granger says that since abdicating his “Tonight
Show” throne to Jay Leno a decade ago, the 76-year-old granddaddy
of late night's been more private than ever. Granger says, “Mostly,
he's enjoying his life."
Which, according to Granger, includes relaxing at his Malibu mansion with his wife Alex, playing tennis and golf, occasional poker nights with buddies like Chevy Chase, and escaping on his yacht where Johnny can sail the deep blue sea instead of walking a red carpet.
While he may not miss the grind of doing a show every night, he still has millions of fans that sure miss him.
