A Rapper In the Sun
The hip-hop godfather is knockin' 'em dead on
Broadway, and nobody is more blown away by his surprise hit
than its star, Sean Combs, himself. "I never thought
people would be yelling bravo at me on Broadway as an actor,"
P. Diddy admitted.
We met up with America's most unlikely new stage star just before Tuesday night's performance of "A Raisin in the Sun," in which the rap icon reprises the role immortalized by Sidney Poitier.
"I was blessed to have reached out to Sidney Poitier, who believed in me," P. Diddy told us. "He said, 'I believe in it, I feel it, I believe in you. Any help you need.' I owe him a lot for giving me that boost of confidence to not look back."
"A Raisin in the Sun" has been smashing Broadway box
office records, while Sean's powerful stage debut has won him
rave reviews from once-skeptical critics, but the role has had
a strong effect on him as well. "It's just the most incredible
experience that's also changed my life personally," Combs
revealed. "It just made me take a step back. You know,
I started calling my mother and giving her things."
Sean says he's also become a better father: "I would say the play makes you deal with certain issues that we run from, which is being appreciative about the smaller things in life."
"A Raisin in the Sun" will play on Broadway through July 11.
