The Start of a Beautiful Friendship
Back before the fan frenzy, huge success and "Must-See" Thursdays, there was some bad hair, a group of six wide-eyed actors, and a little pilot for NBC. As the show finishes its ten-year run, we went back in time to revisit the early days of "Friends."
"This show basically in its inception
is nothing more than six people sitting around saying funny
things to each other," Matthew Perry told us during our
first visit to the set.
And it seems that right from the start, the superstar cast
was extremely close. A hopeful Matt LeBlanc told us during
the same visit: "We have really good actors, everyone
is really talented in the cast; I just can't wait to go back
to work."
When the show began, everyone could sense
the magic brewing down at the Central Perk. "That's the
thing with this group," Jennifer Aniston told us then.
"They're just completely intertwined with each other's
lives."
"I'd rather be playing Ross," Lisa Kudrow joked.
"I'm him, I really am."
"I think the show has developed a pretty faithful following,
so hopefully they'll stay," Aniston said ten short years
ago. "You couldn't ask for anything better than for that
to happen."
Little did Aniston know just what kind of following the show
would have. After tuning in for a decade, and witnessing some
of TV's most memorable moments, fans get emotional just thinking
about the end -- as did the cast when we talked to them recently:
"It's just really sad," Courtney Cox Arquette told
us.
"I'm sure we'll all be emotional and we will make Jennifer
cry, that's always been our goal," Schwimmer said.
"It's just hard, because it won't be as easy as having
to go to work everyday and there they are," Kudrow admitted.
"No, God, I don't know. I can't go
there, the end," Aniston mused.
And yet, we'll all be there for the end
nonetheless, tonight at 8:00 pm on NBC.
