James Avery

As Phillip Banks on the “Fresh Prince” he and his nephew, played by Will Smith, lived in a luxurious mansion in Bel Air. They even had a butler. But in real life, James Avery prefers a simpler life here at his two-acre English country estate in Los Feliz, California, just 10 miles away from Bel Air.

James bought his 1920's estate with his wife Barbara in the early 90's. He told “Extra” it's the perfect place to display his unique collection of African American art and antiques. And being such a history buff, it makes sense that his 4,300 square foot home is located in this historic neighborhood.

Well we got an extra treat that day, Joseph Marcell, who played the cynical butler on “Fresh Prince,” was also there visiting his former employer. Joseph says, “The problem with life is you have to have good friends and I have a good friend.”

And, after nearly a half a decade, James Avery has found you don't have to live in Bel Air to still be a prince.
