'The Shield'

It's detective Vic Mackey, the baddest cop in America, in the baddest show on television. Star Michael Chiklis says, “I would never show my daughters this show."

“Extra” met up with Chiklis on the set of his controversial new FX cable network hit, "The Shield." In it, the actor who once played TV’s most lovable cop, "The Commish," is now a brutal bandit with a badge. He says, “It's a 180-degree change."

In just the first two episodes of "The Shield," Detective Mackey has beaten a suspect to a pulp, taken money from drug dealers, given a hooker crack, and murdered a fellow police officer. Chiklis says, “It pushes a lot of buttons and it evokes a lot of questions."

But not in the Chiklis household, where the star has forbidden his own children to watch it because of all the sex and violence. Chiklis admits "The Shield" is so provocative, it actually sparked a fight between two of his friends. Michael says, “I had to get between them and say, ‘Guys, it's just a television show.’"

It’s a show that Chiklis is proud of just the same. He says, “If this show was all spice and nothing to it, I wouldn't have taken it."

In fact, the cast boasts an Oscar winner in Walton Goggins, who produced and starred in this year's best live action short, "The Accountant," and now plays detective Shane Vendrell. He says, “I think it's worthy of all the praise it's getting and all the controversy it can muster."

Chiklis adds, “There's a lot of people in the country who want smart, adult entertainment."
