'Idol' Insider: Controversy -- What the Heck Is Going On?

The competition is heating up, but the remaining "American Idols" weren’t looking so hot, Tuesday, as they fumbled through a night of Gloria Estefan music. Simon laid into the singers so hard that even Gloria spoke up, saying, "These kids are going to need therapy, but what about my own therapy?"

Today, Randy Jackson talked to us about the latest "American Idol" debacle and the most tumultuous week the show has ever seen, which included charges of racism following a week where the bottom three contestants were black.

"Has everyone gone mad in America? Is everyone crazy?" Randy responded. "This is a singing show. This is about singing, not about color, not about race, not about gender -- it’s only about finding the best talent in America."

The latest shockwave to hit the show came when producers revealed that John Stevens has been the subject of threats because people don't think he deserves to be on the show. But after the show, Simon Cowell told "Extra" that America needs to get a grip.

"I think there's a lot of anger directed at (John) because they don't think he's good enough to stay in," Cowell told us. "But I said to him tonight, ‘You have nothing to feel guilty about just because you got more votes than somebody else; you should be happy.’"

And rather than his usual harsh words, after Steven’s performance Wednesday night, Cowell told him, "You've taken every bullet thrown at you like a man."

So is Simon playing favorites? Jackson told us, "Some could say that it would buy (John) another week or two, but I think Simon just got caught in the moment, that we’ve just been, like, duking it out with this kid."

And, in an ironic turn, the "Idol" judges revealed that they aren't so sure that Stevens is the most likely to get voted off this week. "I think Fantasia's vulnerable after tonight," Jackson insisted. "I thought it was a weak performance."

As for John? "America’s very unpredictable at this point," Randy reflected. "They’ll probably keep him on for another 2 months, and we’re only on for six weeks or so."

So will "AI’s" frontrunner really get the boot? Tune in to FOX, Wednesday night at 8:30, for the Results Show.
