Stars Make Khaki Cool Again
That common khaki trench coat is making a major comeback. Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Connelly and Eve all wear them. And now, Kevin Lennox, fashion editor of Glamour magazine, says today’s trenches can be functional and fashionable.
"It was time to revisit a classic and update it," he tells us. "This year it’s all about fit, a color, a pattern, making it yours and making a statement."
The tried-and-true trench has come a long way from TV's "Columbo" and old movies like "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" and "The Pink Panther." From belted to double breasted, short and long, today’s big new selection includes a variety of colors and fun patterns and textures like leather and linen.
"This season just seemed right for so many designers to just reinterpret it and make it fun and accessible for the consumer today," says Lennox.
And everyone should have trench-coat capabilities in their budget. You can go designer with a DKNY for $350, or go for the bargain with a basic black at H & M for about $50. A London Fog is $150, or get a steal of a deal at Old Navy for only $35. But if you want to go high end, Lennox recommends, "Linen that's been treated so its waterproof. It has velvet detailing at the bottom, it rings in at a whopping $1,900 dollars."
Come rain or shine, the classic khaki has come a long way. And for more on trench fashion, don’t miss Friday’s edition of "Extra."
