Oscar Fashion
The stars may have played it safe, but their fashions still had plenty of razzle dazzle.
Renée Zellweger was radiant in a red Carolina Herrera, Julianne Moore was gorgeous in green, and so was Jennifer Lopez in her off the shoulder vintage Valentino once worn by Jackie Kennedy.
Women’s Wear Daily fashion editor Merle Ginsberg was glad to see stars went glamorous, not gaudy. She says, "They didn't look too sexy, but they still respected fashion and the Oscars."
Hilary Swank and Calista Flockhart were pretty in pink while Jennifer Garner looked beautiful in a baby blue Versace. Halle Berry, Kate Hudson, and Diane Lane shone in shades of champagne.
But some stars stuck to the basics. Nicole Kidman in Jean Paul Gauthier, Julia Roberts in vintage, and Salma Hayek was stunning in black and white. But an 8 1/2 months pregnant Catherine Zeta-Jones chose a chocolate brown creation.
Zeta-Jones was one of Ginsberg's fashion favorites along with Renée Zellweger, Kate Hudson, and Diane Lane. But she says Julianne Moore stole the show. Ginsberg says, "I just loved her in green. I thought it was the most beautiful she has ever looked."
This year only a couple of stars were dripping in diamonds, most wore only earrings.
The exceptions: Queen Latifah and Kathy Bates wore huge Harry Winston necklaces and Meryl Streep chose an antique emerald Fred Leighton.
With the exception of Sir Sean Connery, most men dressed down their traditional tuxes with silk ties. All in all Hollywood's biggest night was still a night of high glamour and good taste.
