The 2003 Oscars
From a distance it looked like a normal Oscars red carpet. But there was nothing normal about this year's arrivals. Protesters lined the street instead of reporters and sharpshooters lined the rooftops as Hollywood gathered for the low-key celebration.
With the media sequestered to a bridge overlooking the entrance, ABC's pre-Oscar show found the few stars like Denzel Washington who felt like talking. He said, "Our hearts and minds are in a different place."
Some of the stars avoided the red carpet all together. Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, and Barbra Streisand came in through a back entrance. Other big names, like Jim Carrey and Will Smith, chose not to show up at all.
But still, the Oscars are the ultimate date night for Hollywood’s power couples. Jennifer Lopez had Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford had Calista Flockhart, Kate Hudson came with rocker hubby Chris Robinson, Matthew McConaughey was arm-in-arm with new girlfriend Michelle Smith, Salma Hayek slipped in with Ed Norton, and Colin Farrell brought his pregnant girlfriend Kim Bordenave.
Sunday was also a family affair. Meryl Streep and Tatum O'Neal both brought their daughters and Nia Vardalos brought her entire big fat Greek family.
The somber mood made appropriate attire a tough choice. Some like Nicole Kidman dressed down in basic black. But there was still plenty of color - Julianne Moore, Jennifer Garner, and Jennifer Lopez glowed gowns of green and blue. Queen Latifah was the queen of diamonds while Halle was a hit in gold, Renee Zellweger was a vision in red, and Salma Hayek was simply stunning.
Even in these turbulent times, the stars still honored this Tinsletown tradition.
