Three Decades of the World’s Most Interesting People
It's been around longer than cover girl Jessica
Simpson’s been alive. The Bible of pop culture is celebrating
its 30th birthday with a special double issue, which People's
Senior Editor Jess Cagle says is packed with an extraordinary
look back at stars, scandals and a few unsolved mysteries,
including how much plastic surgery Michael Jackson has had
and where Jimmy Hoffa is.
And while we're on the subject of mysteries,
just where is Monica’s notorious blue dress? "We do know
that if she never took it to the dry cleaner, it would get about
$2 million dollars at auction," Cagle told us.
People also rediscovered three decades of intriguing details about the stars they've covered. "For example, John Travolta told us a long time ago he wears his underwear inside out to keep the tag from scratching him," Cagle shared. "And don’t mess with Dr. Ruth. She was trained as a sniper in Israel and can actually put together a machine gun in a couple of seconds."
And before Brad Pitt was famous? "He was the chicken standing outside an El Pollo Loco restaurant, and he also drove a limo for a Strip-O-Gram service," Cagle revealed.
Pop princess Jessica Simpson graces the 30th anniversary cover, but it's Princess Diana who's been the most popular cover girl with People readers over the years, gracing an amazing 52 covers.
Julia Roberts was the distant runner-up, with a mere18 covers, and the fan favorite for most mentions goes to Madonna. "We have mentioned her 1,486 times and I’m sure that’s changed in the last week," Cagle said.
