Emotions Run High in the Winners' Circle
Charlize fought tears and Sean brought cheers. Tim took Best Supporting and nobody was robbin’ Renee. All through the night, emotions overflowed from the Oscar stage and "Extra" was right there to get the stars’ reactions.
"Mom you have sacrificed so much for me
to live here and make my dreams come true," said Theron,
addressing her mother who accompanied her to the awards. "And
there are no words to describe how much I love you."
Mom you have sacrificed so much for me to live here and make
my dreams come true," Addressing her mother, who had accompanied
her to the awards, Theron said: "And there are no words
to describe how much I love you."
Charlize’s tears followed after giggles, thanks to handsome
presenter Adrien Brody (who stole a smooch from hottie Halle
Berry last year when he won Best Actor). This year, he presented
the Oscar for Best Actress, but not before preparing with a
blast of Binaca.
"That was great ‘cause it just kind of broke the tension.
I'm very glad he did that," Charlize told us.
But when we asked Adrien why he didn’t actually lay one on Theron,
he told us: "I don't like to do repeat performances. I
like to be fresh."
A fresh face at the awards was "Best Actor" Sean Penn.
Though a four-time nominee, this was his first Oscar appearance
and he was a gracious winner.
"There is no such thing as ‘best actor,’" said Sean.
"And that's proven by the great actors I was nominated
with."
"Great" describes Oscar for the Lords of these awards,
as the record setting night developed a very familiar ring for
"The Return of the King" -- the third installment
in the blockbuster "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The
Lords rang up a total of 11 wins out of 11 nominations, a tally
that ties "Titanic" and "Ben-Hur" for most
Oscars won.
"This is a big, big night for all of us who love science
fiction, and fantasy like ‘Lord of the Rings'," said the
film’s director and driving force, Peter Jackson.
While "The Lord of the Rings" also earned "Best
Song," it was a duet by Will Ferrell and Jack Black that
was the night’s big hit, as they offered their ode to long-winded
winners: "You’re Boring."
And the legendary Blake Edwards, who gave us the Pink Panther
series among many other comedy and drama treasures, made quite
an entrance to pick up his Lifetime Achievement Award on an
out-of-control wheelchair.
The 76th Academy Awards were filled with magical moments from
the minute host Billy Crystal appeared -- Billy even did a duet
with old pal Robin Williams. And while it was his first hosting
gig at Oscar’s new home in the Kodak Theater, Billy told us
"It's great to be back."
So what was the best part of the night according to Crystal?
"Usually it’s saying goodnight, but the whole night tonight
was great from beginning to end."
