Stars Speak Out Against War
From actors like Martin Sheen, George Clooney,
and Meryl Streep, some of the biggest names in entertainment
are rallying around a common cause: saying "no"
to war with Iraq.
George Michael appeared on the British TV show "GMTV Today" to argue his case. He says he is compelled to speak up. He says, "There's this feeling tugging at me, that's calling to me."
George Clooney also spoke out on the German TV show "Beckman" and Martin Sheen has been a very vocal opponent of war. Sheen says, "I can't walk through this period of history in my country and not have an opinion about what's going down."
War was also a hot topic at this past weekend's BAFTA Awards in London. Meryl Streep says, "I'm glad it's not my job to stop it. But I hope they stop it without a war."
Director Martin Scorcese says his movie "Gangs of New York" shows the futility of fighting. He says, "There has got to be another way and I hope in the next few weeks it turns out that way."
Some celebs have gotten heat for their anti-war stance, but
Tim Robbins tells "Extra" that stars are simply speaking
for millions of Americans without a voice. He says, "I
view it as a privilege and an honor, but I also know there are
a lot of other voices not being heard."
At Sundays Grammys, stars were asked to keep politics out of the show, but Sheryl Crow did slip a "no war" message on her guitar strap.
So while war seems more and more imminent every day, the people who make us laugh, cry and sing are now trying to make us reconsider.
