Hounsou Making Oscar History

He's the pride of Benin, Africa, and next weekend Djimon Hounsou is up for a best supporting actor Oscar for his powerful "In America" performance. How’s he feeling about this honor? "I haven’t digested it yet," Hounsou told us. "There is so much going on."

Hounsou is making history, along with Charlize Theron, as Africa's first ever Oscar nominees. We went shopping with former model Djimon (he was discovered by designer Thierry Mugler) as he got ready for the big night, helping him to find some hot Oscar ice — cool diamond cufflinks by Beverly Hills jeweler Martin Katz.

With his accessories nailed down, there's one thing left to settle: the way to pronounce his unique name ("JI-mon HOON-soo"). You can bet the world won’t forget that come Oscar night.
