Gibson Brings His Passion to the Screen
It is the biggest gamble of Mel Gibson's incredible career. "The Passion of the Christ" has been this Hollywood heavyweight’s personal passion for fifteen years. The 79-day shoot was tough on everyone, especially Gibson’s star, Jim Caviezel.
"He really suffered the poor guy. To begin with he had to get up at 2 am and get airplane glue all over his body," explained Mel. "Looking down at people and they're wearing coats and scarves and you’re up there in a loincloth -- it's just excruciating."
Gibson tells us the film’s special effect are out of this world: "I've never seen anything quite like ‘em. You don't know they're special effects, that's how good they are."
The most remarkable bit of movie magic comes at the crucifixion when complex tricks are used to simulate the grueling event of Christ being nailed to the cross.
As heavy as the movie may be, director Mel, well known for his practical jokes, did plenty of clowning around behind the scenes. The proverbial prankster even planted a rat in one cast member’s pockets.
For more inside details, be sure to watch "The Making of ‘The Passion of the Christ,’" Sunday and Tuesday at 9 p.m. on PAX TV.
