Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron exposes a dark chapter of her life to Diane Sawyer Thursday night on "Primetime." The South African beauty talks for the first time on TV about her abusive father, and the night her mother shot and killed him in self-defense when Theron was 15 years old.

Theron said to Sawyer, "He had a disease. He was an alcoholic, and you know family and alcoholism is not a really good mix. I think acting has healed me. I get to let it out."

Theron also revealed how she walked in on the horrifying scene just moments after her mother fired the gun. Sawyer says, "She talks about it with great pain and emotion. Some of the pauses were so long and wrenching, sometimes I wondered if I could sit through them."

But the 28-year-old actress refused to become the second victim of the crime. Today Theron is close friends with her mother, Gerda, who never served any time.

Theron also managed to turn the experience around for good use, by appearing in public service announcements against domestic abuse and tackling the role of an abuse victim, turned serial killer in "Monster."

The film is based on the true story of murderess Aileen Wuornos. Theron received a Golden Globe nomination for the role and is already getting Oscar buzz.

Theron’s love life is also in full bloom with sexy Irish actor Stuart Townsend. Sawyer says, "There is no question this is the guy for her. You will see when you see her face light up."

Now that Theron proved she has more to offer than just her pretty face, she’s ready for a comedy to come her way. Sawyer says, "She wants comedy in the worse way. In fact, it is kind of a public service announcement; can anyone make this girl laugh?"
