Billy Joel in Car Crash

Long Island police found a horrifying sight Saturday night. It was a $120,000 Mercedes Benz wrapped around a tree on the lethal "dead man's curve" on Long Island.

Winthrop Barrett was the eyewitness who called 911. An airbag and the rescue teams' jaws of life got the "Piano Man" out of the wreck alive. Barrett says, "If he hit it head on, he wouldn't be with us today."

Joel was flown by helicopter to University Hospital in Stony Brook, suffering a possible broken nose and cuts to the face. As for the cause of the accident, New York Daily News’ George Rush tells "Extra" alcohol was not a factor.

Joel is no stranger to trauma. The singer was involved in a major accident in 1982 when his motorcycle hit a car. And just last June, Joel escaped serious injuries in a similar crash where he entered a substance abuse rehab clinic for ten days. He told People magazine it was his Father’s Day gift for his 17-year-old daughter Alexa Ray.

Joel's shaken ex-wife, and mother of Alexa, supermodel Christie Brinkley was spotted snapping photos of the wreckage just hours after Saturday’s night's accident.

Despite his personal woes, Joel has enjoyed the recent success of "Moving Out," the Broadway smash based on his music.
