Deborah Cox
Just hear her belt out one velvet note and you'll be singing the praises of R&B pop chanteuse Deborah Cox.
Today, she is a recording artist with three hit CD’s under her belt. It all started at a very young age, when she first heard Gladys Knight. Deborah says, "Her voice just penetrated me in that it moved me and I always felt that if I ever decided to sing, and do it professionally, I wanted to move the audience the way she did."
While still in high school, Cox was given the chance. She was scooped up as a back-up singer for a surging Celine. Deborah says, "That was a great experience. She was just starting out here in the U.S. and I learned a lot about discipline."
By the time she received her diploma, her voice not only evoked comparison to Whitney Houston, but Cox also garnered the attention of Whitney mentor, Clive Davis. Deborah says, "He's really very passionate about the music, and it's wonderful to work with somebody like that who still appreciates a good song."
Quickly, her debut was released, striking a chord with fans and critics alike. Now, seven years since, the singer/songwriter has clearly progressed with J Records release, "The Morning After." Deborah says, "It's really just an album that reflects a lot of things that I had been through in relationships. I really dug a lot deeper and became a little more daring in some of the things that I decided to talk about."
Cox is also daring in her career choices. She is currently set to star onstage in the romantic comedy, "Love On Layaway." Deborah says, "I am very, very interested just in the art of acting and it's also very therapeutic. I found there are many different sides to me and I get a chance to kind of just let them out."
