Jak
and Daxter:
The Precursor Legacy
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is a new
game by Naughty Dog, the company that brought you the Crash
Bandicoot series. This game takes some of the basic principles
from that game and builds tremendously on them by taking full
advantage of all the Playstation 2 has to offer.
The plot to this game is simple: Daxter accidentally falls into
a pit of a magical substance (Dark Eco) that transforms him
into an orange muskrat. From there, Jak and Daxter set out on
an adventure to turn Daxter back to his original form.
While this game uses a very basic scheme, simply collecting
objects, the way it goes about doing so is quite new. There
are two basic objects you have to collect, the precursor orb
and the harder-to-find and more important power cell. The power
cells are what you are really after. Often you will encounter
town villagers who will trade you their power cells for precursor
orbs or will make a trade if you carry out certain tasks for
them. It is a nice change of pace to go around collecting items
with a purpose to them.
The
search for precursor orbs and power cells will lead you all
throughout this wonderfully animated 3D world. While there are
many different areas you have to explore, they are all seamlessly
tied together. There are no game-stopping loads that you have
to sit through while you travel from one area to another. Also,
if you happen to find yourself at a high vantage point on one
level, you can actually see far to enough to look at other levels.
Another fantastic innovation to this game is the users ability
to have full control of the camera angle at all times. When
you first move to a particular area, especially in tighter ones,
you can use the right analog stick to move the camera into whatever
view you like. This is definitely something that I hope other
game makers take note of.
The graphics and gameplay are as good as anything on the PS2.
The details for all the characters and all the backgrounds are
fantastic. The control for Jak and all his jumps and attacks
is very fluid and takes very little practice to master. His
jumping ability, and double-jump ability, comes in handy all
throughout the game.
Jak and Daxter is a game that is very simple to learn to play
and to follow. It shouldn’t take long for players of all ages
to get the hang of it and to follow the storyline. It is definitely
a great adventure that everyone can enjoy.
