Hot Places to Travel
Weekend June 16/17, 2001

Whether you’re dashing to Disneyland, hopping to Hawaii, or cruising the Caribbean, these places are always packed with summer travelers, but this year, for a really hot summer destination, you'll have to think cool.

Travel and Leisure Magazine's Nelou Motamed says Iceland, just south of the Arctic Circle, is Europe’s trendy place to chill. But don't let the name fool you-- known for glaciers and rugged terrain, Iceland is astonishingly green in the summer and warm.

Motamed says, "You can get a tan in Iceland and, you know, the Icelandic women are really beautiful.”

There’s also a good reason to join the crowd at the Blue Lagoon, a natural hot springs right outside the capital city of Reykjavik. Reykjavik is rocking these days with music from homegrown talents like Bjork. And since the summer sun never sets this far north, Iceland is also land of the endless party.

From icy ... to Chile! Chile, on South America’s west coast, offers what most summer vacations spots don't, skiing. You see our summer is their winter, so you can spend June through August on the slopes.

If skiing's not your bolsa, that's "bag" in Spanish, you can relax with a little shopping and a bottle of world famous Chilean wine in the cosmopolitan capital city of Santiago.

Mark Connelly, style director for Conde Nast Traveler, says Russia’s St. Petersburg is first choice for many in the fashion industry. He says, “When a lot of fashion people start going to a destination kind of on the quiet, you know it's not long before it becomes a hot spot."

Built on the banks of the Neva River in 1703, St. Petersburg is known as the Venice of the north. Considered the cultural capital of Russia, it is filled with palaces, theatres, and the world famous Hermitage museum. And restaurants around the city are reinventing Russian cuisine. Best of all, the exchange rate makes St. Petersburg an affordable adventure.

So remember, from caviar to ice to Chile ... cool is hot this summer.
