Unclaimed Baggage
Monday June 11, 2001

Ten million bags are mishandled every year. Maybe delayed. Maybe worse. Maybe lost. And just where do all those lost bags land?

They touch down at the unclaimed baggage center in Scottsboro, Alabama.

They have a men's department, eyeglasses, CDs, cameras, and paintings. The labels here read like a who's who of designers.

Then there's the wacky stuff, a puppet from the movie “Labyrinth,” a cowboy hat signed by Mohammed Ali, and a forty-carat emerald.

Want to make sure your unmentionables don't become part of this "lost world?" Don't run from the problem. Here are a few travel tips to keep you from losing your luggage.

- Use a skycap to check your bags. And don't forget to tip a buck or two per piece.

- Know the three-letter identifier for your destination and make sure your bag is properly tagged.

- And finally, know your itinerary. Where you're going, where you're staying. Make copies and put one in each piece of luggage you check.

And if your bag still gets lost, at least now you know one last place to check.
