What Does 300k Buy?
Monday June 4, 2001

How much home can you buy for $300,000? Don't get up. We went coast to coast to find out for you. We start out in Southern California with Jason and Cynthia Shoot and they're learning that $300,000 in California means cutting corners.

The Shoots weren't too excited about this 1300 square foot, two bedroom, one and a half bath home they toured with realtor Matt Epstein. Jason says, “We may have to compromise with square footage, lot size, location... "

The more popular the area, the more compromises you'll make.

California might not be the place you want to be. Stuart Wolf of Homestore.com says that your $300,000 buys you a lot more lot and more house in places like “Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, and those areas you can get tremendous houses."

Near Omaha, Nebraska, you can get four bedrooms, three baths in a 3,800 square foot home. In LasVegas, a 3,200 square foot home will get you bedrooms a BBQ and spa. And in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, 2600 square feet, can get you four bedrooms and two baths.

But here in Manhattan that same $300,000 is gonna get you a little bit different home. How about 650 square feet of penthouse on the Upper East Side says expert Mary Jo McNally. “You also get one bedroom and one bath.”

Mary Jo says, “They're not really looking at square footage in New York. They're looking for the floor plan, the location and the light."

Well, at least you get a doorman.
