Finding Cheap Gas
Friday
May 25, 2001
Everyone's fuming about gas prices climbing towards $2.50 a gallon in some places for premium. “Extra” learns that you can save yourself about 20 cents a gallon no matter where you buy your gas with one important tip: Stop using the good stuff, most cars will do just fine on regular unleaded.
|
Van Tune is the editor in chief of Motor Trend magazine who says even if your carmaker recommends high octane, you probably can get by with less. And there are several myths that drive people to that high price pump.
Myth #1: Use premium because it's a new car, and it's supposed to keep your fuel clean.
Tune says, "Typically a newer car, you'll be able to probably downgrade your fuel easier, with less ill effects than you will with an older car."
Myth #2: You might damage the engine if you use lower octane gas.
Tune says, “My recommendation run a tank through your car, you're not going to hurt it. If it starts to ping, try the mid-level gas."
The odds are you won't hear a thing. According to AAA, Americans waste more than a billion dollars a year on premium gasoline they don't really need. Now you know the truth, so start saving that 20 cents a gallon. And if you're still looking for bigger savings, just start riding a bike.
