Los Angeles Salad Bars
Friday
May 18, 2001
We
found e. coli and super high bacteria counts in
our recent undercover sampling of salad bars in
New York City. Well, you won't like what we dished
up in Southern California either. Bad bacteria
are bi-coastal.
|
Once again we loaded up the ice chest and dropped in on six different salad bars in the Los Angeles area. Lettuce, bean, potato and macaroni salad from each location. And then back to the lab for analysis. How does California stack up against New York?
Not good. Food chemist Ron Schnitzer, who tested both New York and California salad bar samples, found more of the fecal contaminate e.coli.
And a new germ, staph aureus, which comes from, "the source of the bacteria is almost always an open wound or cut. And if the toxin is there you're most likely going to get ill."
How sick will you get? Ron says, "You have severe diarrhea, you have nausea, and you really wish you would pass away."
Of all the food items we tested, the lettuce was the most often contaminated. So, if you've got to eat at the salad bar, your best bet may be lettuce free.
