What's
In Your Pets Food?
The commercials make them look and sound delicious and
nutritious. But with so much out there, not all pet
food is fit to eat. In fact some could be making your
four-legged friend sick.
Ann Martin wrote the book "Food Your Pets Die For" after
her animals kept getting sick from store bought food.
She says, "I was absolutely shocked when I found out
the ingredients that can be used in pet food."
During her research, Ann says she saw all kinds of nasty
slop going into pet food at some manufacturing plants.
She tells us. "We have materials from slaughter house
facilities, diseased meat, we have road kill. But what
I think shocked me most was the fact that dogs and cats
are going into pet foods."
It sounds sick but Ann says euthanized animals can actually
become food for other pets. Slaughterhouses deliver

horrors.
Veterinarian Joe Deemer says all that foul filler is
making pets ill. He says, "I see a lot of sick animals
with their immune system being suppressed."
Ann agrees, so she started cooking at home for her dog
and three cats. She says, "It's not as easy as opening
a can or a box. But at least you know what you are getting."
But what if you don't have time to properly prepare
people food. Most of us end up prowling the shelves
looking for just the right food for our pets. Labels
help but they're so confusing ... you need a vet to
translate them.
Laurie Logatz of Petco warns that by-product is a bad
word. She says, "You want to look for stuff that says
like chicken, chicken meal, or any of those sort of
things."
Beef, fish and bone meal are good too. And while there
is a lot of information to chew through, if you take
the time, Fido will be healthier and happier.
